The iconic American tradition of road travel is still alive and thriving, and drivers across the country are gearing up for summer adventures. A new survey of more than 2,500 Americans , conducted online by Optimal on behalf of Mazda, reveals that 93% of Americans like to travel by road, and at least 68% plan to do so this summer.
Mazda believes that developing the ideal vehicle for road travel is about creating unforgettable experiences on the road. Whether it’s comfortable driving or engaging dynamics, its design philosophy focuses on creating lasting memories in the vehicle. To help improve the time both drivers and passengers spend en route to their destinations, Mazda sought to better understand Americans’ road travel preferences.
For Americans, the allure of road trips lies not only in the final destination, but also in the journey. When asked why they like to travel by road on vacation, the most popular reasons are scenic views (82%), adventure (71%), and the flexibility to stop and explore different places along the way (71%). . Additionally, driving pleasure (58%) and bonding time (57%) were among the top considerations. In other words, traveling by car offers a versatility and emotional connection unmatched by other alternative modes of transportation.
As for where Americans plan to go this summer, Florida (23%), California (17%), and Georgia (13%) are the most popular road trip destinations. However, these places are greatly influenced by the place of residence of the travelers. Unsurprisingly, the most popular place travelers plan to visit this summer is the beach (54%), while visiting family and friends (39%), taking a trip to the mountains (36%) or visiting a park national (35%) are other of the most popular destinations.
Not surprisingly, the survey also revealed that travelers want enough space and comfort in the vehicle they choose. 2-row SUVs or crossovers (31%), like Mazda’s new 2025 CX-70 , and 3-row SUVs or crossovers (20%), like the first-ever 2024 CX-90 , were the most popular among respondents.
When users were asked what basic features they considered essential in a vehicle for road travel, the desire for comfort and smart organization stood out, selecting comfortable seats 85% of the time, followed by ample storage compartments (50%) and capacity interior cargo (44%). Mazda intentionally designs the driver’s seats to conform to the body’s natural posture and react seamlessly to vehicle movements. Inside models such as the CX-90 and CX-70, drivers can also find seats upholstered in Nappa leather, equipped with driver customization settings, to further enhance comfort during long trips. Additionally, Mazda’s latest two-row crossover, the CX-70, addresses travelers’ practical needs with unique trunk storage space, allowing for clutter-free adventures.
When looking at essential technology features, in-car GPS navigation is considered crucial for a travel vehicle and was selected 73% of the time, while smartphone connectivity is close behind at 58%. Other notable technologies include USB ports (51%), security systems (42%) and tire pressure monitoring systems (42%). When it comes to essential safety and driver assistance features, respondents selected reversing cameras (67%), blind spot monitoring (56%) and collision warning (47%) as the top three items essential. Although reversing cameras come standard on vehicles manufactured from 2018 onwards, the latter two are not always offered. Representing its strong commitment to safety, Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE® technology is included in all new vehicles, offering critical safety features such as blind spot monitoring, intelligent brake assist and much more. This dedication has earned Mazda five 2024 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards, solidifying its position among the top brands of safety excellence.
Mazda recognizes the intrinsic connection between driver, passenger and vehicle. That’s why it incorporates human-centered design in each model, to improve every moment of the road trip. From industry-leading safety ratings to comfortable, ergonomic seats designed to withstand long-distance driving, travelers can feel safe in any Mazda they choose. As drivers across the country prepare for their next summer adventures, Mazda remains committed to creating vehicles that not only provide safe and comfortable transportation, but also inspire unforgettable memories along the way.
