Married at First Sight’s Paul Brunson reveals FOUR types of ‘couple personas’ and how to avoid getting ‘the ick’
Married At First Sight’s Paul Brunson has shared his expert advice to couples jetting off on their first holiday together this year – to avoid the dreaded post-break split.
A first holiday can be an exciting time for budding lovebirds but a new study found that nearly two-thirds (60%) of young couples find it can be the ‘make or break’ moment in the relationship.
The Relationship Science Expert commented on the national study – commissioned by TUI BLUE – which found over a quarter of new couples (27%) don’t dare venture away together until they have been dating for between four and six months, while a further 40% wait even longer before jetting away.
According to Brunson, it’s not without good reason.
“A first trip away together is an exciting but nerve-wracking step for most new couples,” said the TV host, who has also appeared on Celebs Go Dating.
“There can be anxiety about spending so much time alone together that it reveals potential annoying or unusual habits to one another… or even worse, the ick.”
According to the study, the three biggest fears for new couples on vacation include snoring while sleeping (29%), farting in front of a partner (29%) and sharing a bathroom (26%).
Turn-offs directed towards their partner, however, included discovering their weird habits (21%), seeing how messy they are (20%), and finding out they FaceTime their family every day (13%).
Age can also play a factor for those contemplating a quick getaway with a new partner, and those aged 18-35 were most likely to put their love to the holiday test quickly – with nearly a quarter (20%) going on holiday after one- two weeks of dating.
Meanwhile 41% of those aged 56-65 wait until after six months to book a big break.
Paul, recognized as one of the ‘world’s most influential matchmakers’, is determined to help lovers combat the issues a first trip away together presents.
He said: “To help new couples, I’ve worked with TUI BLUE to identify typical ‘couples holiday personas’ in a bid to eliminate the stresses of first-time holidays by sharing tips and specially curated itineraries including which resorts to book.”
The MAFS love expert has broken it down into four types of couples, which he says often have very different holiday experiences.
ADVENTUROUS SPIRITS
Paul said: “These couples thrive on excitement and physical activities.
“They are always up for a challenge, enjoy exploring nature, and indulge in thrilling experiences such as kayaking, snorkeling, or paddle-boarding.”
CREATIVE EPICUREANS
Paul said: “These couples are passionate about discovering new tastes, learning new skills, and expressing themselves creatively.”
“They enjoy activities that stimulate their senses and creativity, like wine tasting or a cooking class.”
CULTURAL CONNOSSIEURS
Paul said: “These couples have an insatiable curiosity about the world and its diverse cultures.
“They are lifelong learners and enjoy immersing themselves in new experiences such as guided tours or trying local authentic dishes.”
ROMANTIC RELAXERS
Paul said: “These couples are about relaxation and spending quality time with their partner in a romantic setting.
“They prefer laid-back activities and cherish moments of peace and intimacy, such as a romantic sunset dinner or a couples massage.”
Knowing which category you and your partner fall into could help ensure a smooth first trip away together.
And despite any misgivings ahead of the holiday, the research also highlighted top tips from couples on how to ensure a smooth break away.
Not stressing over the small things was key for 30%, while a third (33%) advised not spending the time glued to phones.
Nearly a quarter of couples (23%) also suggested trying something new and picking an activity based on common interest as a surefire to make the most out of the holiday.
“With over half of new couples surveyed opting for a beach holiday for their first big break together, TUI BLUE has some sensational resorts across various short, mid, and long-haul destinations, that offer the idyllic solution for a getaway,” said Louise Bates, Managing Director of Concepts, Design & and Delivery for TUI BLUE.
“We know how important the first break away together is and our jam-packed programs offer activities to bring couples together whether they want to chill out or work out.
“We’re delighted to be working with relationship science expert, Paul Brunson, to help new couples navigate their first holiday together and take a crucial next step forward in their relationship.”
