Downing Completes Acquisition for Final Phase of Downing Plaza
Property developer Downing has successfully completed the acquisition of Heron’s Yard in Newcastle, which will mark the final phase of its landmark development, Downing Plaza.
The 14-storey scheme, located on Heber Street, will provide state-of-the-art student accommodation designed to meet the growing demand for high quality living spaces in city centres.
The 411-bedroom scheme will comprise a mixture of 293 standalone studios and 118 cluster beds.
Heron’s Yard will complete Downing’s vision for Downing Plaza, which is situated on the former site of the historic Newcastle and Brown Brewery. It features a remarkable array of facilities, including 120,000 sq. ft. of teaching space for Newcastle University Business School, over 1,800 student bedrooms, a 183-room hotel, and extensive retail space.
The prime site in Newcastle was selected to provide unparalleled convenience and accessibility for students and offers proximity to Newcastle University, vibrant city amenities, and excellent transportation links.
Designed by architect Simpson Haugh, Heron’s Yard will include a beautifully landscaped courtyard, providing students with a relaxing private outdoor space. The development will also offer extensive amenity spaces spread throughout the building, which will provide students with communal space for recreation, socializing, relaxation, and study.
Heron’s Yard has been designed to a BREEAM Excellent standard with sustainable features included throughout the development.
This strategic move marks an exciting milestone for Downing as it continues to expand its PBSA portfolio and solidify its presence in key university cities across the country.
Martin Fenlon, Associate Projects Director at Downing, said: “We are thrilled to have acquired this prime site in Newcastle to complete our vision for Downing Plaza. This is the latest in a line of key strategic acquisitions for us as we continue to expand our portfolio across the country.
