Vienna, October 14, 2024 – Citroën is presenting the world premiere of the C4 and C4 X at the Paris Motor Show, a completely renewed range of sedans in the C-segment. At the same time, the brand is continuing its exceptional momentum. In the space of a year, Citroën has revised its commercial vehicle range, further developed the Berlingo and the SpaceTourer and changed the face of the B-segment with the new C3 and the new C3 Aircross. Now the brand is preparing to launch two important models in the C-segment.

Launched at the end of 2020, the C4 ranked second in Europe among C-segment compact sedans (all powertrains combined) in the first half of 2024, just behind the Golf. Accessible and versatile, allowing customers to find the offer that best suits their needs, it ranks third in the ICE market. A pioneer in the C-segment electric vehicle market, it remains in the top 5 today, offering a well-balanced offer that is both affordable and efficient. Launched in 2023, the C4 X has made a very good start in the Middle East and especially in Turkey. Its development will accelerate its launch and represents more than ever an opportunity in Europe.

New Citroën C4 and C4 X Enhanced Style and a Smoother Driving Experience.

The C4 and C4 X have gained in maturity and character, while building on their strengths such as comfort and space on board. The models retain their own identity in their segment, supported by a design that combines several automotive concepts, while their silhouette has become more fluid and balanced. In this way, the brand meets the expectations of customers looking for greater simplicity, modernity and strength, with a model that offers better roadholding. The front end of both vehicles has been redesigned and the new logo and brand identity have been integrated. The C4 has also seen an evolution in the rear to give it greater clarity and contours, while the C4 X retains its attractive fastback design.

The revised design goes hand in hand with improved on-board comfort. The interior features new, redesigned Citroën Advanced Comfort ® seats and a new 7-inch digital instrument cluster that complements the 10-inch touchscreen. Add to that the Citroën Advanced Comfort ® suspension, generous space in all rows and almost 20 driving assistance technologies that make everyday life easier. A trip in the C4 or C4 X is an incomparably relaxing experience.

In Europe, the new models will be accompanied by a range of engines that advance electrification and enable customers to reduce CO2 emissions while protecting their budget. In addition to the proven electric versions with 100 kW (136 hp) 1 and 115 kW (156 hp) 1, the new hybrid versions 100 1 and 136 1 will also be available. Depending on the country, the 1.2 l PureTech 130 EAT8 1 will also be available, so that the right offer is available for all customer needs.

1 – DESIGN: BRAVE AND UNCOMPLICATED

A modern, streamlined front section

The C4 and the C4 X are unique in their segment. They offer an attractive combination of different automotive concepts:

  • With its raised, confident lines, the C4 combines the dynamism of a coupé-like sedan with subtle SUV design elements.
  • The C4 X represents the elegance and smoothness of a fastback, the sophistication of a spacious four-door and the charisma of an SUV.

Away with the superfluous and towards balance: the new C4 and C4 X capitalise on the strengths of their distinctive silhouettes while taking a new path that leads to greater modernity, character and maturity. With the renewed front and rear sections (on the C4), they are now simpler, stronger and more structured, achieving greater harmony and meeting the expectations of customers in this segment.

The front end, largely inspired by the Oli concept car (2022), includes the brand’s new logo, proudly placed in the center of the redesigned grille, giving the vehicle a stronger presence on the road. The bonnet maintains its original lines and highlights the double chevron painted in silver chrome, which gives the vehicle a touch of elegance and sophistication.

The slim, elegant LED headlights feature a distinctive light signature divided into three distinctive horizontal segments, ensuring immediate visibility even from a distance. The precise shape of the daytime running lights’ covers and central light block is immediately noticeable – a sign of the modernity of the design and manufacturing processes. The front indicators are made using LED technology and are integrated into the lower part of the light signature.

These developments are not just a question of aesthetics. Each element has been developed in close collaboration with aerodynamicists to optimise efficiency. This is also evident in the vertical surround of the headlights, which directs the airflow and puts energy efficiency at the centre.

The front bumper has a modern grille, which is topped at the bottom by an SUV-inspired underbody guard, which is finished in Mercury on the YOU and PLUS trim levels and in Silver Chrome on the MAX. The front section is clearly structured, with a strong character and a verticality that is based on the positioning of the new logo. Color clips in Pure Black or Gold Satin are mounted vertically in the grille of the bumper and underline the confident front section. They also add a subtle color accent.

More smoothness: New aero wheels and optimized side panels

On the side, the new 18-inch AMBER wheels with diamond finish and precise shaping embody a perfect combination of aesthetics and functionality. Their aerodynamic design is not only an eye-catcher, but also contributes to improved fuel efficiency.

The sides have been redesigned to create a more fluid appearance. Their streamlined design helps to visually lengthen the silhouette of the car and give it a more dynamic look. In perfect harmony with the grille, they are enlivened by Color Clips that extend horizontally across the rear of the car, allowing a touch of personalization to underline the unique character of the design.

A slimmer, more roadworthy rear for the C4

At the rear of the new Citroën C4, simplicity and clarity are the watchwords of the new design, which has been stripped down to the essentials and stripped down to the essentials. The connection between the lower part of the C-pillar and the taillights has been made slimmer and tighter, contributing to the aerodynamic efficiency of the C4. The taillights, the key elements of this unit, are designed to echo the visual presence of the front section while visually widening the rear of the vehicle. The black band in Glossy Black that connects the taillights gives the vehicle a special aesthetic and serves as a background for the emblematic Citroën lettering.

The rear of the new C4 X has not been significantly changed. The boot lid, with its vertical edge sloping forward, underlines the dynamism of the vehicle. The LED taillights harmonize with the front lighting and frame the boot opening, while the integration of the new logo reinforces the overall effect.

Two new paint jobs

The new direction of the C4 and C4 X also means a change in appearance. Two new colors have been added to the range: Manhattan Green, bright, elegant and full of energy, and Eclipse Blue, which exudes depth and dynamism. These colors will be available alongside Elixir Red, Okenit White, Perla Nera Black and Platinum Gray.

In addition, the two-tone variant with a black roof, which gives the model a touch of exclusivity, remains available. The paintwork underlines the dynamic lines of the models and gives them an even more elegant look.

“The new Citroën C4 and C4 X represent a significant evolution in our design language. They not only display a refined elegance, but also a more robust character and a powerful presence that testifies to our desire to continue to stand out from the crowd. The headlights, with their striking design and LED technology, are not only a guarantee of visibility, but also a statement of dynamism and quality. At the rear, simplicity is combined with visual stability, with each element contributing to a robust impression. The taillights, with their sculptural design, are not just a decoration, but reflect the inherent strength of the new C4, a strength that takes up the pioneering spirit of the Oli concept car.” Pierre LECLERC, Citroën Design Director .

2 – ABSOLUTE RELAXATION: LIKE NOWHERE ELSE

The new C4 and C4 X offer an unparalleled driving experience with the well-being of the occupants at the heart of the package.

A successful combination: chassis and new Citroën Advanced Comfort ® seats

The Citroën Advanced Comfort ® seats have been redesigned to increase on-board comfort. Visual comfort is enhanced by the padded seats, which invite passengers to comfortably prepare for the journey ahead. Seat comfort is increased by a 15 millimetre thicker foam, which provides a soft feel as soon as you get into the vehicle. Dynamic comfort is enhanced by a structured foam and a high-density layer in the centre of the seat, which offers a pleasant driving experience even on long journeys. Ergonomic comfort is also optimised by the improved support and height and lumbar adjustment for the driver.

Combined with Citroën Advanced Comfort ® suspension, these seats offer outstanding comfort and transform every journey into a smooth, serene experience. This technology uses progressive hydraulic dampers that absorb the road bumps so that the vehicle seems to float over them. The technology provides a smoother driving experience and makes life on board easier.

Latest generation infotainment system and new 7-inch instrument cluster

The dashboard has also been redesigned: in the MAX trim level, a completely new 7-inch high-resolution instrument cluster is located behind the steering wheel. This new feature improves the perceived quality on board the C4 and C4 X thanks to a modern graphic interface that complements the 10-inch touchscreen. The digital instrument cluster has been designed for optimal clarity and intuitive information presentation. It is complemented by a color head-up display that shows important information, reduces eye strain and increases safety. The steering wheel features the brand’s new logo.

The C4 and C4 X offer a latest-generation infotainment system with 3D navigation that is simple, fast and ergonomic. The intuitive interface has a 10-inch HD screen and can be customised thanks to the widget system. Widgets offer a quick way to access applications and content on the vehicle’s touchscreen. The interface also features natural voice recognition, a digital assistant that can be activated by the vehicle’s occupants with the command “Hello Citroën” that understands what they say, answers their questions and carries out their voice commands. Thanks to the wireless transmission of the smartphone to the 10-inch HD screen, there are no more cables in the interior. The system can be easily updated with “over the air” updates.

Technology for safety and peace of mind

The new C4 and C4 X are equipped with up to 20 driver assistance systems that use automated technologies such as sensors and cameras to increase road safety:

  • Active Safety Brake: This system intervenes when a risk of collision is detected and automatically brakes the vehicle to avoid an accident. It works day and night and detects various obstacles, pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Collision warning: At speeds of 30 km/h or more, this function warns the driver of the potential risk of a collision with the vehicle in front so that he or she can react quickly.
  • Highway Driver Assist: This system combines adaptive cruise control with lane keeping assist and enables level 2 semi-autonomous driving.
  • Adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go: This system adapts the speed to the vehicle in front, maintains a safe distance and can even stop and start the vehicle again without the driver’s intervention.

In addition, the new C4 and C4 X offer systems such as blind spot assistant, lane keeping assistant, coffee break alert, attention assistant, automatic high beam, advanced traffic sign recognition and speed recommendations.

Better vision also contributes to comfort. The models feature:

  • Full-color head-up display: Projects key driving data in color directly into the driver’s field of vision to keep attention on the road.
  • Rear view camera with Top Rear Vision: is activated when reversing and displays a 180-degree rear view on the touchscreen, including colored indicators that warn of nearby obstacles.
  • Vision 360: 360-degree view around the vehicle, updated in real time to assist the driver during slow driving maneuvers.

space on board

All architectural comfort features have been retained in the new C4 and C4 X.

The new C4 embodies the essence of a versatile compact sedan, with practical external dimensions and a spacious interior:

  • A wheelbase of 2,670 mm offers 198 mm knee room in row two and is considered the benchmark in its segment.
  • An external width of 1,800 mm, which comfortably accommodates three passengers in row two, with a shoulder width of 1,380 mm and an elbow width of 1,440 mm.
  • 380 litres of trunk volume with a low, flat loading sill (715 mm) and straight sides for optimum usability.
  • Two-way adjustable trunk floor for a maximum volume of 1,250 liters with the rear seat folded down.

  • External width: 1,800 mm, so three people can sit next to each other.
  • Shoulder width in row two: 1,366 mm and an elbow width of 1,440 mm for plenty of personal space.
  • The spacious trunk offers plenty of storage space regardless of the engine:
    • Trunk volume: 510 liters, for the needs of business people
    • Maximum width in the trunk: 1,010 mm between the wheel arches, for easy loading.

3 – MOTORIZATION: OFFER TAILORED TO CUSTOMER NEEDS

Promoting simple and affordable electrified solutions in Europe

The new C4 and C4 X are perfect examples of Citroën’s response to the challenges of the energy transition. They represent efficient electrified drives that support customers on the path to electromobility.

  • The revisions of the C4 and C4 X are the ideal opportunity to offer the C4 and C4 X with the 136 and 100 hybrid engines respectively, launched this year, offering an accessible, simple and versatile solution for customers.
  • The range is complemented by the 110 kW and 115 kW electric motors, which offer a range of 355 and 415 kilometres 2 respectively for the ë-C4 and 360 and 425 kilometres 2  respectively for the ë-C4 X, and reduce costs, weight and fuel consumption by choosing a smaller battery combined with extremely efficient fast charging, while making it easier to cover long distances.

In addition, depending on the market, a version with the 1.2-liter turbo engine 130 EAT8 will be available. With 130 hp and an eight-speed automatic transmission, it offers a dynamic and smooth driving experience.

48-V hybrid technology: simplicity, versatility and low fuel consumption

Citroën is introducing two different power levels: 136 Hybrid for the C4 and C4 X and 100 Hybrid for the C4. This technology enables better budget control thanks to a reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of around 20%. This technology is particularly beneficial for drivers in the city, where it is estimated that up to 50% of journeys can be made in electric mode, reducing the carbon footprint and running costs.

Since this technology does not require charging at a charging station, it is particularly user-friendly and ensures serenity on board. Driving comfort is increased by the smooth, automatic management of the electric and combustion engines, which adapt to driving conditions without the need for the driver to intervene. This ease of use, combined with the battery’s ability to recharge when braking, makes these versions particularly suitable for everyday city driving.

In the Hybrid 136 version, the 1,199 cc three-cylinder engine delivers 136 hp (100 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 230 Nm of torque at 1,750 rpm. Its design includes a variable geometry turbocharger and a timing chain that increase its performance and reliability. It complies with the Euro 6.4 standard and operates according to the Miller cycle, resulting in optimized thermal efficiency and thus a reduction in CO 2 emissions. At the same time, the permanent magnet synchronous electric motor delivers 21 kW (28 hp) and 55 Nm of torque to meet energy needs when torque is needed and at low speeds. It also assists in starting the combustion engine and recharges the battery during braking, minimizing brake wear. The system is complemented by a 48-volt belt starter for quickly starting the combustion engine, an electrified ë-DSC6 dual-clutch transmission with six gears and a 48-volt lithium-ion battery with 432 Wh, which is housed under the left front seat and thus does not reduce the interior or trunk volume.

The Hybrid 100 version is based on the same technical basis, but delivers an output of 100 hp (74 kW) at 5,500 rpm and a torque of 205 Nm at 1,750 rpm.

The new generation 1.2-litre supercharged petrol engine has been developed for hybridisation and consists of 40% new components.

A carefully coordinated 100% electric offer

In 2020, Citroën was one of the first manufacturers to offer a C-segment sedan with a fully electric drive. This involved two decisions that remain part of Citroën’s philosophy today. The first is the launch of multi-energy models, which make the range simple and easy to understand for customers, allowing them to choose the drive that best suits their needs. The second is the choice of small batteries to limit weight and costs and reduce consumption and budget. Equipped with a 100 kW fast charge, Citroën models are perfectly suited to daily journeys and can also be used on longer journeys.

The new ë-C4 and ë-C4 X are an extension of personal space, a cocoon that transforms every journey into a moment of relaxation and pleasure. The ë-Comfort promise includes electric mobility with no CO2 emissions while driving, no noise and no smells, no vibrations, no jerking, no gear changes and with instant torque for a pleasant driving experience and with remotely programmable services for a relaxed everyday life.

The two electric versions of the new ë-C4 and the ë-C4 X differ mainly in their range and their adaptability to different types of routes:

  • With a range of up to 415 kilometres 2 for the ë-C4 and 425 kilometres 2 for the ë-C4 X, the version is particularly suitable for extra-urban use and offers greater flexibility for longer journeys without the need for frequent recharging. This version is equipped with a 54 kWh battery and a 115 kW motor, giving it greater capacity to meet the needs of customers who regularly travel longer distances.
  • The second version, with a range of up to 355 kilometers 2 for the ë-C4 and 360 kilometers 2 for the ë-C4 X, a 50 kWh battery and an output of 100 kW, is a practical solution for everyday journeys in cities and suburbs and is also suitable for long journeys thanks to the fast charging system.

Fast charging over long journeys is a key requirement, which the new ë-C4 and ë-C4 X meet with the possibility of using 100 kW fast chargers. The vehicle recovers around 10 kilometres of range per minute and can restore 80% of its charge in less than 30 minutes. This flexibility ensures that the ë-C4 and ë-C4 X are always ready for the next journey, wherever you are.

CITROËN Ë-ROUTES: TRAVEL PLAN WITHOUT COMPROMISE

The Citroën ë-ROUTES application offers dynamic, stress-free route management and changes the way drivers interact with their electric vehicles. It is a real personal assistant that is connected to the vehicle and adapts in real time to optimise the journey. ë-ROUTES displays vehicle data, traffic conditions and the status of charging stations and promises optimal control on every journey. The application adapts to changing conditions and, if necessary, suggests alternative routes so that the destination is reached with maximum efficiency. The app not only ensures that travel times are optimised, but also provides reliable and up-to-date information on the charging network so that charging stops can be planned safely.

From 2025, the ë-ROUTES functions will be offered directly in the vehicle’s infotainment system.

V2L: Optimizing Energy Use

V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) technology allows an electric vehicle to power external devices, turning the vehicle into a mobile and flexible energy source. Citroën will install this feature in the new ë-C4 and ë-C4 X. To use V2L, simply plug the desired device into the vehicle’s corresponding socket. This socket will be available as an option from the first half of 2025.

V2L is particularly useful in situations where access to a power source is limited, such as when traveling or doing outdoor activities. Customers can plug in their laptop, charge their electric bike, or even run a small fridge directly from the vehicle during a picnic or power outage at home. The capacity of the vehicle’s battery determines the amount of energy available for external devices, and users need to keep an eye on energy management to ensure they retain enough power for their driving needs.

The manufacturer has not yet provided any binding consumption and emission values for this vehicle. The vehicle is not yet available for purchase. All information is subject to final homologation.
